Battle of Berlin

 

On April 16, 1945 the final Soviet attack to take Berlin began. Four days later bombarding would start on the city. Soviets began by breaking through the German Oder front lines and started racing toward Berlin. April 21st, 1st Belarusian front under the command of Zukov’s enters the north suburb of Berlin. On 23rd Russian soldiers advance into all suburbs from all sides of the city. On 24th of April Germany 12th army begins an attack to relive the defenders of Berlin. April 25th two Soviet armies now meet up encircling Berlin, one from south (1st Ukraine front) other from north 1st (Beelrussainfront) advance in to the city.  On 27th, the 12th army was halted by Russian soldiers 15 miles from the city then slowly pushed away. April 30th Hitler commits suicide, Russia captures the Reichstag. May 2nd the rest of the German units in Berlin surrender to the Russians. On May 7th 1945 the unconditional Germany surrenders ending the war in Europe. V-E Day (Victory in Europe).
